Good Enterprise article recently on the history and naming of the Thomas Johnson Bridge between St. Mary’s and Calvert Counties.
I remember Buzzy telling me that when he was County Commissioner in the early 60’s, they first began holding hearings on building the Solomons Island Bridge. He said that most of the Calvert folks who attended the hearing were very much against it. In particular, the Calvert business owners were down on it because they thought that it would be the ruination of their economy. Their concerns were that once the bridge was built, all of their clientele would wend their way over to the big city of Lexington Park to do their shopping.
Of course the exact opposite happened as Solomons developed and became the Little Annapolis that it is today. Wonder if all those anti-bridge NIMBY-ites aren’t the same ones who have rallied to ban all big box stores in Calvert County. Full circle, self-fulfilling prophecy – guess where all of these shopping dollars are going? Thank you Calvert County NIMBY-ites.
