Breakfast, the two of them are eating cereal when one of them passes gas. Much laughter and to-and-fro ensue while I try to use it as a teachable moment. I inform them that the correct way to handle this is to simply say “Excuse me.” Or if they wanted to get creative they could say “Excuse me for being bold, but that little thing I just couldn’t hold.” That seems to work as they settle back down to finish their cereal.
After a moment’s reflection though, Lily looks up to ask me “Gran J, if I fart and it doesn’t make any noise and it doesn’t stink, do I still have to say “Excuse me?”
I don’t know what to say.
