JD Maggard's Country Store

Jack Wise tipped me off about a country store he visited in Kentucky named JD Maggard’s.  His email follows:

“We went to a wedding this weekend in Eolia, Kentucky, about an hours drive from home. We passed this small country store not far from the church, and were told that we needed to stop at the store as it was the one in the movie “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. We stopped, and found that the owner confirmed his store was used in the movie, and that he was a big Baltimore Colts fan. He had an early 1900’s wooden refrigerator filled with nicknack’s and memorabilia from the old Colts, including Johnny U pics and posters. Very interesting place, and I plan to return when I have more time.   My wife met a guy named Tom running the store, and he was very nice to her and showed her around the store. There was a lady also there who has friended my wife on facebook who took pictures of Judy in the store behind the meat counter which was in the movie. Nice country folk!”

After reading Jack’s email, I threw JD Maggard’s in the old goggle machine.  In addition to the photo above, here are some interesting comments in the following (click here.)

Re: the movie Coal Miners Daughter, I couldn’t locate any scenes from it showing Maggard’s Store, but here is the movie trailer.  It shows Levon Helm from The Band acting as Loretta’s father and also contains a good quote on the mountain way of life “Coal mine, moonshine, or moving on down the line.”
