Monday Morning Quarterbacking

Whenever I run into a fellow retiree that I haven’t seen in awhile, somewhere in the course of the catch up conversation he/she will say something along the lines “Don’t miss the work and the b.s., but do miss the people.”  I smile whenever they say this because truth be told – I don’t miss the people either.  The work acquaintances that I knew and whose company I enjoyed, I’ve kept in touch with.  And as far as meeting and dealing with different people, Buzzy’s Country Store provides me with the opportunity to do that in as fun and enjoyable an environment as I can make it.

All that said however, there is one thing that I do miss about the old work place:  all of the Monday morning quarterback talk during football season particularly after a Redskins-Cowboys game.

When I worked aboard Pax River I was in an area where we had contact with many customers, delivery men, service providers etc, and on the day after the Skins/Cowboys game it was always fun to hear and partake in the give and take between fans of both teams.   Some of the exchanges would pass for high comedy.  Other exchanges were of the Pee Wee Herman variety – “I know you are, but what am I?”  If there was a controversial referee’s call (and when isn’t there one in an NFL game?) lots of to and fro would go down about the nature of that call and how it impacted the outcome.  Some folks would even become angry and get upset particularly if their team was on the losing end.  Winners were always happy.

Given that the Cowboys prevailed last night, guess we’ll have to endure the “How about them Cowboys” today.  However, here is a video to offset that, followed by one by George Strait that has a few more redeeming qualities in it than one featuring Cowboys.
