Where Have You Gone Dustin Hoffman?

I had a Dustin Hoffman weekend and didn’t even know it until just now.  Friday night Pam and I watched Kramer vs. Kramer which we both had seen several years ago in another lifetime.  As the movie began I told Pam that the only scene I could remember was Dustin Hoffman saying back to his boy something about “I hate you too you little shit.”  Sure enough I remembered it correctly (@2:05 mark.)

Something I had forgotten however is that Kramer vs. Kramer won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1979 over Apocalypse Now.  Hoffman and Meryl Streep won Oscars as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress.   The kid (Justin Henry) and Jane Alexander were also nominated for awards for their roles.

Last night we watched “Quartet” which was a nice little movie about aging musicians in an old folks home in England.  (Trust me it was much better than it sounds.)

I was surprised to learn just now, as I searched for the reviews on “Quartet” at IMDB, that it was directed by Dustin Hoffman.  This was his first directorial effort.

But the more I noodled around, found that my bigger surprise was learning that Dustin is now 76 years old.  Maybe he did “Quartet” with an eye towards his old folks home stage of life.  Seems like just yesterday that he and Mrs. Robinson….well, you know.
