Remember Mateus Wine and their funky little bottle that after drinking its contents you would then use as a candle holder?

While in Portugal, we visited the Manor House/Palace that appears on the Mateus label.

Today however, the Palace seemed to me to be in need of some serious TLC. While touring the Palace I kept thinking of Jagger’s line about a “jaded, faded, junky nurse.” Looked to me like it had seen its better days and was now just some slicked up tourist site living off its rep. Unlike Jagger’s next line in the song, the Palace to me was not “pleasant company.”
But notice the absence of the “Sleeping” nude sculpture in the wine label. The sculpture was done by a Portugese sculptor named Cutleiro who “specialized in doing works depicting the female torso,” which is a nice way of saying that he was into sculpting nudes.

Mateus wine is still produced and once I get past the whole Palace-being-a-waste-of-time-thing, I may consider stocking some of it in Buzzy’s Country Store.
And since I mentioned the lyric, now here’s the tune that ran thru my head while visiting the palace. The line “my breasts will always be open” may even serve to describe the Palace’s sleeping lady sculpture.
