Young man was in the Store last summer and informed me that he was from Sportsburg, Pennsylvania. When I told him that I’d never heard of it he replied that it was near Punxsutawney. I asked if he had ever attended the Groundhog Day events. He laughed and said “Not since I spent a night there in the Punxsutawney Jail.”
He then told me how he and some buddies were in Punxsutawney the night before the event, had a little too much to drink and got arrested. He spent the night in the Punxsutawney Jail sleeping on a cement slab of a bed.
He said that when he awoke early the next morning hung over and sore, he looked across the aisle at the other cell and there was the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil in a fancy doghouse cage sleeping peacefully on a plush cushion with food and water around him. The young man realized that he had hit his rock bottom when a groundhog was living better than he was in the Punxsutawney Jail. He said that he had never been back to Punxsutawney for the event nor to jail again.
Sounds like Phil may have been responsible for changing the young man’s life doesn’t it? Happy Groundhog Day!
