Getting Old (Just 22 and I Don't Mind Dying)

Speaking of the Beatles (previous post) I’d planned on doing something today on their “When I’m 64” song.   I resemble that remark since today is my birthday commemorating that very occasion – 64 years young.  However, as Sarah Palin would say “I’ll forgo you that conclusion” on playing the Beatles’ song just because I always thought it was a little too sappy and stupid.  (Here’s the link to it if I’ve piqued your interest enough that you want to hear it (click here.))

How about instead this Paul Simon take on getting old?   All this post-Grammy talk of Sam Smith plagiarizing Tom Petty makes me laugh when I think of all the folks who have nicked Bo Diddley all these years. Paul does a little of that here. Did you know that Bo spent some time in D.C (click here.)  Would be remiss if I did not also mention that I share this day with Abe Lincoln whom I always feel a little bit sorry for.  The ole boy sure put up with a lot in his lifetime only to go out of here in the worst way imaginable.   How’s this then for one of his better quotes? “If I were given 8 hours to cut down a tree, I’d spend 6 hours sharpening my ax.”  See, unlike yours truly, Abe was a very patient guy.  Me?  I’d just get Jimmy Cullison to cut it down for me.
