Sports-wise today ranks right up there as being one of the best single days in sports history, a moment in time if you will. Caps play their second hockey playoff game at 12:30, Red Sox-Yankees are at 1:30, and both the Orioles and Nationals are in action later this evening. NASCAR race at Talladega this afternoon always makes me miss Dick Trickle. (Not really, just wanted an excuse to say Dick Trickle.) Then there’s the NBA’s playoff game seven of Spurs and Clippers tonite, along with some prize fight in Vegas. And in between all that there’s my favorite event of the day – the Kentucky Derby.
Always enjoy watching the Derby and the festivities leading up to it mostly to check out all those ladies in all those hats. In perhaps a case of TMI for me to be telling you this, women in hats always get it done for me a la Frankie Valli’s line – can’t take my eyes off of you.
Not talking baseball caps either; I’m talking about those hat-porn-make-you-stop-and-stare-Southern-Belle-kind of hats that ladies always wear at the Derby (like these shown here.)
As to why women wear these hats to the Derby, it has something to do with the Derby having been modelled after English racing events where the attendees dressed up (click here.)
Doesn’t matter to me, any woman who walks into Buzzy’s today wearing a Derby hat gets a free drink along with my utmost respect and admiration. (Obviously the drink is the more valued prize here.) Billyjo will be behind the counter later this evening at race time so swing by if you are out and about. Me? I’m going to be home watching the race and trying to talk Pam into wearing one of those hats.
