Reminded me of something I heard attributed to a college president addressing his faculty. He urged them to “Be good to your A students because they will someday return to teach at our instruction. Be good to your B students because they will one day send their sons and daughters to our institution. But be very good to your C students because they are the ones who will someday give us an endowment.”
Tommy Lasorda was my daughter Ryan’s commencement speaker when she graduated from the University of Hawaii. (While I knew him as the Dodgers’ former manager, Ryan and her graduate friends knew him as “the Slim Fast guy.”) Tommy included in his remarks words along these lines: “In life there are three kinds of people. Those who make it happen. Those who watch it happen. And those who say “What happened?” Always strive to be in the first group.” Here was one of Tommy’s shining moments as manager where he was making things happen – to the Philly Phanatic:
