Took the Grandkids to visit the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum yesterday. (One of my options included taking them to the County Fair. However, I decided that I’d rather drive 3 hours and do city traffic than endure the Fair.)
It has been many years since I’ve been to the Air and Space. When I did so I recalled seeing the Wright Brothers Flyer (which I always knew as the Kitty Hawk) hanging in the corner of the museum. Witness this quote:
During the 80’/90’s however, the Smithsonian folks restored the Flyer and set up a separate Exhibition Room to tell the whole story of the Wright Brothers. For details (click here). There is also an interesting back story as to how the Wright brothers feuded and negotiated with the Smithsonian folks before their plane eventually ended up there (click here.) Believe it or not, for several years it was being exhibited in London at the Science Museum. Thankfully, the Wright Brothers did the right thing and got it back in the U.S.
As one of the commentators said “It’s like looking at the first wheel.”
