Happy Bona Dea!

A festival for women only long before the Lilith Fair?  December marks the time of year for the second of two annual Roman festivals for women only in honor of the Goddess Bona Dea. Those Romans were just a little ahead of their time weren’t they?  Unfortunately, as you might have guessed, it took a man to ruin the party.  Some dude named Clodius disguised himself as a woman and crashed the party supposedly to try and have sex with Caesar’s wife Pompeia.  (Wonder if the word clod originated from this guy?)

Speaking of Lilith Fair, Sarah was always a mainstay of that concert series.  Here’s one of her angrier tunes that someone once laid on me in a not-so-complimentary way.  (She too was angry at the time and I think it had something to do with that “beautiful f’ed up” man line (2:20 mark))
