Already Gone

Years ago I worked with a guy who took his wife to the Captal Centre to see Diana Ross.  He related how at one point in the concert Diana announced that she was looking for a volunteer to come up on stage and help her with the song Muscles.  The guy said he raised his hand but Diana selected someone else.

The volunteer then joined Diana on stage and she suggested that if he did a good job helping her on the song, she would take him away with her for the rest of the tour.  After hearing Diana say this, the guy telling me the story said that he made a comment to his wife “Well, you should be glad she didn’t pick me, because I’d have to go with her.”

On the way home from the concert, his wife then followed up and asked him if he was serious about going away with Diana Ross if asked to do so.  He told her “Honey, I love you,  But if Diana Ross says “Come on and go with me” then I’m gone.”  He said that his wife hadn’t spoken to him since.

As he relayed the story to me, I could tell that he was looking for some validation that his wife was being unreasonable about all this.  He asked me what I thought.  I told him that I had once heard something about handling hypothetical arguments and questions –  to always lie and tell the person what they wanted to, hoped to or expected to hear.  The truth may set you free but it can also land you in hot water.

I’ve often daydreamed about that concert scenario, only for me it would be Stevie inviting me to go with her………
