While on this trip, I caught up with some reading materials, one of which was Elvis Costello’s autobiography Unfaithful Music. As some of the reviewers have noted, it’s a little uneven in that Elvis jumps around as he tells his life story. But I didn’t mind it because he was always saying something of interest and when it comes to jumping around, I don’t see a problem.
As he discusses his father’s influence on him throughout his life, I found that we had something in common. He followed in his Dad’s footsteps as a musician and then watched his father’s health decline and slowly slip away. His father had dementia towards the end of his life and Elvis relays how sad and difficult all that was to deal with.
On a lighter note (see, there’s that jumping around) Elvis talks about his being banned from Saturday Night Live in 1977 for playing this song instead of the one he was supposed to play. Here is a video discussing the ban and then shown is the SNL performance. All of it seems kind of dumb now doesn’t it?
