I recently laid in a stash of Buzzy Koozies and it got me thinking about them in general. For more info than you ever cared or needed to know about Koozies (click here). For instance, did you know that another name for them is “Candoms.” Pretty good right?
The first generation of Koozies that I can recall were those styrofoam ones which were a bit of a pain in the ass. They were clunky and tipped over easily. The rim lid always came off when you pulled the can out and ultimately they didn’t last very long. Plus, they didn’t really keep the beer that much colder. They eventually went Betamax on us.
However, the next Koozie iterations were much better. Buzzy jumped on the customized Koozie band wagon when he had the Quaint & Friendly wrap-around-Velcro ones made up. Here’s one that I have nailed up in the Store.
Thru the years Buzzy then had several iterations of custom Koozies which were obtained from Chesapeake Custom Embroidery. Back in ’93, in honor of the Store’s 40th Anniversary under his ownership, Buzzy had these I Got Buzzed Koozies made up as shown here on a Dwayne Sullivan-produced Buzzy puppet:
Today there are all sorts of Koozie styles to choose from as well all sorts of websites in the business to sell you some.
A subset of the Koozie business has to do with providing them for special occasions such as a wedding or for other events and projects. Here is one that Eric Brotherton donated to the Buzzy Koozie collection in honor of his and Rick Loheed’s racing skiff Twisted Oyster:
As pick up lines go, I guess “If you let me see your Koozie, I’ll shown you my Candoms” is probably just as effective as any other. However, it may depend upon the Koozie holder though.
