Opening Day A Day Late

I hit a new low in my sports’ fandom history yesterday by not knowing that it was MLB’s opening day.  (In my defense, it’s still March and baseball usually doesn’t commence until April.  That, coupled with the fact that I have not been checking any sports  news out lately, made me  unaware that the O’s and Nats had completed their spring training and were now ready to roll for real.)

Boswell’s book titled Why Time Begins…..  always resonates in my mind on opening day.  The start of a new baseball season brings new hopes and new dreams for a successful season.  On Day One, all teams are equal in the standings and everyone begins undefeated.

As Boswell notes in his book though, it is far bigger than that because in life, every day is the first or opening day for us.  Baseball’s opening day is the metaphor of new hopes and new life.

So when my son Brady texted me early Thursday morning “O’s opening game @ 3 p.m. today” I was very pleasantly surprised to learn of this and immediately felt a little better.  As I have noted previously, it doesn’t take much to please me.

It’s springtime, it’s Easter and now baseball is back.  Life is good.  Plus, the Orioles won 3-2 and are in first place in the AL East.  Life is real good!
