I drive by him everyday but very rarely give him a second thought. However, when I had to stop at the cross walk to allow some students to cross the road I took the time to look a little more closely at our Freedom Boy chiseled there in stone. It got me wondering about his origins.

I checked some more on the sculptor Hans Schuler to learn this:
Richie Havens had finished his set at Woodstock but because the next act was not yet ready to go on, he was asked to continue playing and improvised this tune on the spot (click here for back story.)
