Rain and Sleep

The second most repeated comment overheard in Buzzy’s Country Store regarding all of the rain pouring down has something to do with it being good sleeping weather.  (The most common comment is usually along the lines “Well, we sure needed it.”  Being in a semi-weather dependent business, I always have to bite my tongue because what I really want to respond with is “No, we did not.)

But about the rain/sleep connection, I do agree 100% with that assessment.  Rainy nights and mornings always make me want to stay in bed and sleep some more.  And this is coming from someone who regards sleep as a huge waste of time.

Although most of the “evidence” for rain equating to good sleep is anecdotal, here is a good article that covers several possible explanations for it (click here.)  I also found this chart in an article that discusses how melatonin levels can impact sleepiness.

However, I am sure that the main reason rain makes me sleep so well has to do with the white noise factor associated with it.  You see B.P. (Before Pam) I used to sleep with music on all night long.  Because Pam didn’t care for it and preferred it quiet, I stopped listening to music as I slept.  (I tried headphones for awhile but it was too much hassle so I gave it up completely.)  It took me some getting used to sleeping amidst the sounds of silence, but I proved that this old dog can learn a new trick every so often.

So whenever it does rain and I hear it tapping on our windows and skylights, I roll over and go back to sleep very contented.  As Eric said “Let it rain!”

Now as to that “20 Toes Theory” that rain makes you horny, that’s a whole nother conversation (click here.)
