Sister Marceline – 102 With A Positive Attitude

While attending and enjoying my cousin Sister Marianne’s Jubilee celebration, I also had the pleasure of meeting Sister Marceline who is 102 years old.   (I am trying to meet as many 100+ year olds that I can hoping that some of their longevity will rub off on me.)

I met Sister Marceline thanks to the efforts of Sister Joan, who was acting as our unofficial guide as Marianne readied for the Jubilee ceremony.  While we were sitting in the Church awaiting the start of the celebration, I asked Sister Joan, if they had any centenarians.  She responded “Yes, several.”  She then paused and clarified, “You know, now that I think about it, they’re all gone except for Sister Marceline who is sitting right over there.”  I asked Sister Joan to introduce me, which she did.

Sister Marceline was sitting when Sister Joan brought me over and informed her that I was Marianne’s cousin and that I wanted to meet her.  Sister immediately stood up out of her chair to greet me, laughed and informed me that she taught Marianne at Immaculata High School in D.C. when Marianne was a sophomore there.  (Sister Marceline discusses her students in the following video.)

I didn’t know at the time I met her that Sister’s last name is Mattingly else I would have asked if there was any connection to our St. Mary’s County Mattingly’s.  Turns out that she is originally from southern Indiana.
