Seeing this Benjamin Disraeli quote got me to thinking about Cream’s album Disraeli Gears and how it got that title.
Turns out that it was more about a bicycle than it was about the former British Prime Minister. As a member of Cream, Eric Clapton mentioned wanting to buy a racing bicycle. Someone picked up on it and said “One with Disraeli gears?” The speaker mispronounced derailleur gears but the band members like it enough to keep it as the title of their debut album.
Disraeli Gears featured two of Cream’s bigger and more popular hits Sunshine of Your Love and Strange Brew. Both are great tunes but SWLABR is the one that I played repeatedly because it always got me up and moving. Its crazy lyrics reminded me of some similarly crazy ladies that made me want to move away from them and draw a moustache or two on their pictures. (SWLABR stands for She Walks Like A Bearded Rainbow.)
