After President Trump dubbed him Alfred E. Nueman, Mayor Buttigieg responded with something having to do with not knowing who that was and called it a generational thing. Because I am closer to Trump’s age than I am to Buttigieg’s, I thought Buttigieg mishandled his response. Instead of deflecting and making an it an age-related issue, Buttigieg should have went on the offensive, and come back by noting that Trump resembles Sylvester P. Smythe of Cracked magazine fame:
I found this good article from a former editor of Mad Magazine who also doesn’t buy Buttigieg’s response and goes onto explain the origins of Alfred E. as Mad’s mascot (click here.) The author also notes that the first time they put Trump on the cover of Mad Magazine in 2015 their sales doubled.
Speaking of Mad, Network is now appearing on Broadway with Bryan Cranston playing Howard Beale. In just about every list of moviedom’s all time greatest lines “I’m mad as hell…” is usually listed in the top 20 (click here.)
