In recognition of May being Tavern Month, here is a look at one of the more famous of taverns – McSorley’s in New York city.
Painted by John Sloan the above depicts the interior of New York’s oldest and most famous bar McSorley’s. Today it is known as McSorley’s Old Ale House.
McSorely’s has two pretty good motto’s as follows:
The following provides some background on Sloan’s famous painting. (I had to smile at the description of McSorely’s as “somewhat rough and inhospitable…” They could have been describing Buzzy’s Country Store from back in the day.)

McSorely’s only allowed women patrons following a 1969 Supreme Court decision mandating that they do so. Even then they didn’t install a women’s bathroom until 1986.
This John Lennon song about women’s rights or lack of, seems appropriate. However, I think it’s safe to note that he probably couldn’t get away with recording such a blasphemous tune today:
