Legend of Lorelei

As we cruised down the Rhine last month we passed the Lorelei Rock and heard about how it was here that the beautiful maiden Lorelei used to sit and sing sweetly.  (Yep, you know what’s next.)  Legend has it that sailors who passed the rock at night were lured to Lorelei and ultimately their demise when their vessels would crash amongst the rocks.  Jimmy Buffett right?  Some people claim there’s a woman to blame.

Then this past Saturday, as I was looking for the photo of Buzzy and Father McGary, I came across this postcard that he (Buzzy) had picked up somewhere in his travels.  Sure enough it’s our siren sweetie along with a nice little poem about her.  (I’ve since learned that this is supposedly a very famous poem written in 1824 by Heine but I have my doubts.  If it’s so famous and being the great poetry lover that I am, how come I had never heard of it?  (Insert sarcasm font somewhere in there.))

But the myth of the beautiful lady and the rock had been around even before Heine wrote about her in 1824 as noted here:
