SMC Alumni Weekend

As you can see in the above photo I attended the St. Mary’s College Alumni get together at the Ruddy Duck last week and got to say hello to Leeann Carr.  When my daughter Reagan went to St. Mary’s Ryken, Leeann was her favorite teacher.  Proving the old adage “better late than never,” this marked the first time that I have ever had the opportunity to convey that, along with my thanks, to Leeann for being such an inspiration to Reagan.  (When she graduated Reagan was recognized as the outstanding English student in her Class of 2002.)

This also marked the first time in my 44 years since graduating from St. Mary’s College in 1975 that I have ever participated in any of the alumni weekend events.  When Rich Brewer invited me to join them at the Island Ruddy Duck for their kickoff Thursday evening party, it was an easy event for me to attend because I only live a mile away.

Glad I went as I caught up with folks I hadn’t seen in quite  awhile. ( I even got to meet and talk with College President Dr. Jordan who noted that she had visited Buzzy’s previously but I wasn’t there.  I told her to keep coming back.)

I also got to talk with Puff Linton whose sister Jane and I are good friends because of Bart.  Jane met Bart when they both went to St. Mary’s Junior College before it became a 4 year program.  Jane drops into Buzzy’s Country Store every year and we trade Bart stories of which there are many.

As I met other alum who also graduated in the mid-70’s, everyone was familiar with Jackie Armstrong palming the egg on President Renwick Jackson at our 1975 graduation ceremony.  Jackie was the first graduate called up to receive her diploma.  When President Jackson went to shake her hand, Jackie had an egg stashed in her hand.  It broke when she and Renwick shook hands. I don’t remember much about that ceremony, who spoke, who was recognized etc.  but I do remember Jackie and that egg.

This past Saturday afternoon Jane and Puff along with several other alumni dropped into Buzzy’s Country Store.  John Herbert is shown here with his cooler now sporting a Buzzy decal.

Here’s a photo of me with John’s Buzzy cooler and Jackie’s shoe.  I never did quite get the significance of why Jackie left her shoe.  First the egg and now her shoe.  Go figure.

John Lennon may have been the self-proclaimed Eggman but Jackie will always be the “Eggwoman.”
