My Mom’s birthday coincides with another historic event that occurred today in 1959 when Hawaii became our 50th state.
Turns out that Hawaii’s admission into the U.S. was not without controversy however. First there was reluctance among many Hawaiians themselves as to whether or not they should join the U.S.. That sentiment exists even today as evidenced by materials from this website (click here.)
Meanwhile, opposition to Hawaii statehood was also an issue in D.C. where many Congressmen were not crazy about admitting a state composed mostly of Asian-Americans (click here and scroll down.) This race-based opposition among lawmakers fought against admitting Hawaii before allowing it to become our 50th state in 1959.
Shown here are my Mom and her Hawaiian Granddaughter Ryan who now resides in Maui.
