Buzzy's Hobby Shop

Following Steve Gatton’s post yesterday on Massey’s You Know You’re From St. Mary’s FB page (above), several folks pulsed me to ask if I had seen it.

Believe it or not, I still have a bunch of these cards that Buzzy had made up years ago.  (My guess is that Jim Burdette, who worked at the Government printing office in DC, was probably the chief honcho on this production.)

The Buzzy’s Hobby Shop name on the card was something he came up with as a joke and an excuse for folks who worked on the Base.  He chose that name so that husbands, when asked by their wives just where were they going, could very truthfully answer “To the hobby shop.”  (Back then there was a hobby shop on Base run by my late neighbor Pinky Nagel.)

I was fairly certain that neither Buzzy nor Jim came up with the inputs on the card.  (For one thing, I know that Buzzy knew the correct spelling of “peeking” vs. “peking.”)

So I did some internetting to see what I could find about the card’s origins.  I didn’t find anything conclusive but I’m thinking that the USMC/Special Forces explanations are probably most correct given the overall tone of the card’s operations.  To learn more, check out this link for some interesting comments on the card and its possible origins (click here)

Here is a better photo of the card.  If anyone would like one just let me know.

The following was the “dentist’s song” in the original Broadway play.  When the movie was made with Steve Martin as the dentist, this Hobby song was transformed into the Dentist Song (to check out that version click here.)
