What did Leap Year say to February? Don’t worry, I’m just here for a day.
Someone in Buzzy’s Country Store yesterday asked me what I plan to do with my extra day. As I was in the process of putting together a liquor order to call in today, at first I didn’t really get what they were asking me. When my inquisitor followed up by explaining that since 2024 is a Leap Year and February 29th is an extra day, he asked “Are you doing anything special to celebrate it?”
I started to reply “Yeah, I’m going to a funeral.” (Which is true as I plan to attend a funeral service set for later today.)
However, I knew that that response would just prolong this conversation as in “Whose funeral” “Where is it” “Are they doing anything afterwards” etc.. So, I simply answered “Yeah, I’m ordering some vodka.”
However, my friend’s inquiry did prompt me to re-think 29 February in the light of it being a bonus day so to speak. That and along with the fact that at 73 years of age this could well be the last February 29th I am here for, maybe I should do something neato spoleto today in addition to going to a funeral.
Also, it made me think about the whats and whys of Leap Year, which is something I never really quite understood. I know that the basic reason for messing with the calendar has something to do with calibrating it; but that’s about all I know.
Bottom line, however, I figured if, in my 73 years, I haven’t mastered this little bit of trivia yet, why waste time trying to do so now? However, if I really did want to pursue this matter, just sayin’ – isn’t calling it “Leap Year” a misnomer because it is the other three years that actually skip i.e. leap today? It doesn’t make sense to this Ridge boy. Also, since we are technically not leaping the whole damn year, shouldn’t it be Leap Day today? See why I’m not up for figuring all this out?
Iz with my favorite version of this tune. It always helps relieve me when I am plagued with deep thoughts such these:
P.S. Turns out from Related Posts listed below, I have delved into this topic in at least one previous Buzzyblog post (click here.) Repeating myself – another age-related malady.
