Heard an Elvis impersonator last night do this tune and forgot how great a song it is. Released in 1969, this would be Elvis’ last Number 1 single on Billboard’s Hot 100. It has been reported that when the Beatles met Elvis in 1965, John Lennon asked him why he was performing all the slow ballads and not doing any rock and roll anymore. Maybe Elvis was showing John and the rest of the world here that he was still the King of rock and roll. (Note, for political reasons that I won’t go into, the song’s opening line “We’re caught in a trap” has been running through my mind alot lately. Then again so has Elvis’ “You ain’t nothing but a hound dog crying all the time.”
