I noted yesterday that February is our shortest month but didn’t really elaborate on anything else about my birthday/Valentines Day/Super Bowl/Presidents’ Day month.
A little digging (and yes February is the time to start planning your gardening – see below) it turns out that February is actually named after a Roman festival Februalia.
I don’t know about any of that purging, self purification and cleansing business in the month of February, but all of the festival and partying stuff works for me.
As for the gardening/February connection, there was this from the 2019 Old Farmers Almanac Boys Town magazine:

And finally, while February is usually not noted for its outstanding weather, there was this nice article by Martin Weil in the Washington Post discussing the first day of February and how pleasant a day it was:

Weather today may not be as nice as it was yesterday, but with neither snow nor rain projected, it should still be good moving around weather. And since there are no NFL playoff games to watch, and the NASCAR Clash doesn’t start until 7 tonight, why not get out and take a ride to you know where. Hope to see you later.

Most February songs are slow ones, somewhat reflective and sad. However, this one from The Chills, in the words of Dick Clark “has a good beat and you can dance to it.”
