Upside Down Baluster

When I saw this item on upside down stairway balusters, it reminded me of something that had caught my eye many years ago when I was taking wedding photos.

The wedding was being held at an old house in Charles County and the bride’s mother wanted me to take a photo of her daughter coming down the stairs. After futzing around getting the bride and her gown positioned properly on the stairway, I peered thru the view finder to make sure that everything looked ok. As I did so, I thought that I noticed that one of the stair balusters was upside down. I took the photos and the bride moved on outside to proceed to get married.

Later, when things had quieted down some, I returned to the stairway to double check and confirm that what I thought I saw was correct.

After confirming that it indeed was upside down, I wondered how someone could have screwed that up and why someone hadn’t fixed it. Very strange but at the risk of sounding like Forrest Gump, “that was the last I ever thought about that.”

Until the other day. Somewhere in my internet travels I came upon this item (click here.)

Turns out that there are a couple different theories as to how and why this upside down baluster was done (click here.) I found this video discussing it:

Speaking of spirits wanting to take you away, first, we had the rock and roll 28 Club, but now it seems we also have the “82 Club.” Brian Wilson, 82, checked out two days after Sylvester Stewart, whom you knew as Sly, did so at 82 years of age. Here is Sly musically and otherwise getting his wish by taking you higher at Woodstock. Turn it up. Boom laka laka! Boom laka laka!”
