Musically Odd Couple

How’s about a music Twofer Tuesday?

You got Elvis who was a very gifted singer with a great voice, but his songwriting skills were non-existent (click here.) And then you got Bob, the GOAT of songwriters, but voice-wise, let’s just say that I can do a passable imitation of him singing and I can not sing a lick!

For comparison purposes, check these two videos out.

First up is Elvis covering a tune that Bob wrote and first recorded in 1962. Elvis’ recorded his version in 1966 and captured all the sentimentality and beauty of the song.

Now check out Bob performing the same tune live with the Grateful Dead in 1987 and see what you think. I am not being critical here, but it is a given that Elvis is, was and always will be the King for a reason. (However, Jerry on the pedal steel guitar makes Bob’s version worth hearing throughout if you got the time and inclination to do so.)

And speaking of Bob, Happy Birthday to Bobby Wright who celebrates a milestone birthday today! Here is the Dylan man taking a smoke break while introducing his touring backup band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and singing Happy Birthday to their bass player Howie Epstein. Now, that too is a Twofer!
