The other day I caught the Sports Junkies on DC 106.7 discussing previous snow storms and their experiences dealing with them. One of the Junks mentioned how he was living in Philly during the blizzard of 96 when Philly got 30 inches of snow. He talked about how he and his friends built an igloo made out of the snow and it was big enough to have several folks sit around and drink in it. One couple made it as their first date venue and eventually ended up married. How cool (pun intended) is that for a first date story?
When one of the other Junkies asked him what neighborhood that was in, the igloo fella noted that it was in Chestnut Hill and not in some “bad neighborhood like Temple.”
His mentioning of the Temple neighborhood reminded me of a Buzzy friend I know who briefly attended Temple University before transferring to another college. She noted that one of the main reasons she transferred was due to Temple’s location and how scary it was.
A day after I heard this Junkies’ igloo conversation, guess who dropped into Buzzy’s Country Store? Yep, my Temple friend. I told her the Junkies’ story and how the reference to Temple made me think of her. She laughed and followed up with noting that she too had endured the Blizzard of 96 and that she and her college friends had also built an igloo during that storm. Two igloo stories!
Found the following Philly igloo video on YouTube. Being claustrophobic, I get the heebie-jeebies trying to watch this:
Here is another Philly video discussing that Blizzard of 96 (click here.) Try substituting St. Mary’s County for Philly and you’ll hear some similarities such as “only get 5 days of snow a year but spend 50 days talking about it.”
As for all time best snow songs, Ranker took a stab at it with this summary of the top 65 (click here.) For hard rock fans, we had to go all the way to Number 8 before we got this one from Ozzy and the boys. One caveat however, this tune is not about the falling-from-the-sky-kind-of-snow that is used to make igloos.
