In 1996 Al Gough wrote a front page article in the St. Mary’s Historical Society Chronicles discussing the ownership of the Potomac River. Al was editor of the Chronicles at the time and has since presented me with an autograph copy of that issue (click here.)


Chief Larry, Pat Woodburn and I sat down with Al to discuss whether or not J. Frank Raley gave away the river. Towards the end of our interview (20:35 mark) we also briefly discussed Leslie LeDonne’s book Killing Henrietta Ragan.
Following our talk, Al showed me this framed sign:

Turns out that W.F. Greenwell was the gentleman married to Henrietta’s Mom and died in the horse and buggy accident. Talk about irony – Mr. Greenwell sold buggies and then died in one. (Check out the sign’s bottom line “A Little Higher In Price, But….”)
