Orioles – Wild Card Spot (Maybe)

I have not talked baseball in awhile now, but want to do so today because this may just be the highlight of the Orioles season: they are currently only a half game back in a 3-way tie for a wild card spot in the playoffs. Amazing! (For a related story on how this unusual logjam occurred last night click here.) Here are the current wild card standings.

For the life of me, this is very crazy given how lousy the Orioles have played this season. It reminds me of the old saying “In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king.” In a season of mediocre teams playing mediocre baseball, it makes for an exciting time and hopefully for a fun finish. (I started to say happy ending but didn’t want to rouse up any of your prurient interests.)

Will only bug you with one stat showing how pathetic the Orioles have been this season – Best Hitting Team. Tampa Bay, the team the O’s are currently playing and have won 2 one run game wins over, are currently the best hitting team in all of MLB @ .261. Compare that to the Orioles team batting average .236 and them ranking 25th out of 30 teams. Go figure. (Little statistical anomaly for you here – note how the mighty Yankees as a team are only hitting .230 and rank second to last at 29th on the chart. However, that they are second in the league with the most home runs may help explain their overall success. Then again, the Nationals (60-65) lead the league with the most home runs) and they, like the Orioles, are struggling to get to 500 ball. As I said, crazy times.

Mention crazy and I always think DMB and this tune. Note that he is scheduled to be appearing in Ocean City the end of September. Pam and I will be out of the country then, but if I were here I would be there. Looks like a great concert weekend downy beach.

Part 2 of Chief Larry’s and my interview with JW Raley is currently on YouTube. I’ll have it here on the Buzzyblog tomorrow.

P.S. Capt. Greg has informed me that they will NOT be cruising to Smith Island today.
