A couple in Buzzy’s Country Store who were camping at Pt. Lookout remarked about how nice it was to see all the active farmland as they drove thru the County. My first thought was to respond with something along the lines “Yeah right, what’s left of it.”
But then I realized that if I said that, it would take the conversation in whole different direction. Instead, I went along with their positiveness and replied “Yes, we are very lucky to still have so much of it around us.”
Later, as I drove home to Piney Point and thought about that exchange, I did my little farm survey along the way.
As I drove up Rt. 5 and down Rt. 249 with all the bean and corn fields on both sides of the road, I had to revaluate my cynical would-be first response to my Buzzy guests. They were correct because we really do still have a lot of farmland around us.
Passing it every day and watching previous farmland being turned into developments, I tend to think more about how it was versus how it still is. That’s another sucky thing about getting old, you spend more of your time looking back than you do thinking about the present and future.
On this subject however, present-day Visit St. Mary’s does a very nice job featuring Farm Fun this month in their list of County attractions and events:
When it comes to Farm Songs, GnR had their Down on the Farm tune, but it is not the most flattering of takes on the subject (click here.) Axl with the fake British accent really does come down hard on life on the farm.
Instead, let’s go with something from Craig Morton and his funny video here that combines (pun intended) life as a farmer and folks experiencing road rage.
