Scotch, Civil War and Football

Some things going on in South County for your weekend carousing and for you to check out.

Friday evening, start your weekend off by knocking back some good Scotch at Pier 450.

Saturday and Sunday, Friends of Pt. Lookout are sponsoring a series of events showing what life was like in and around the Hammond Hospital in 1865.

Remember when Sunday was all about Church services and family dinners? I don’t recall either because now, it is King Football that reigns supreme all day. This Sunday it begins at 0930 in Paris (Steelers vs. Saints) and runs all day til midnight in Seattle where the Chiefs will play the Seahawks.

The Commanders have a much needed break with their bye week, but the Ravens will be in action taking on the Bengals in the 1 o’clock hour. If you are out and about looking to experience a sports bar vibe in a country store environment, we will have that game on the Buzzy Big Screen for your viewing pleasure. (Note MLB was smart to make Sunday their travel day after playing the first two World Series games on Friday and Saturday.)

As for the NFL owning Sundays, there was this scene in the movie Concussion which was based on a true story. Dr. Bennet Omalu is seen here asking to have his research findings that football causes concussions released and runs into some pushback. At 00:48 he is informed how big football is:

At the 1:26 mark there is this statement “The NFL owns a day of the week, the same day that the Church used to own. Now it’s theirs.”

Carrie with some some music to get you in a footballing mood with no mention of CTE:

Have a good weekend!
