Buzzy implemented the Store’s Thirsty Thursday beer blast many years ago even before Thursday became sort of a defacto party night. On Thursdays he discounted his usual $1.50 per beer price to 90 cents a beer for all domestic beers. (As you can see in his original sign here, Buzzy called them “local beers.”)
Through the years as the beer distributors would periodically raise their prices, Buzzy held off bumping up his prices mostly because he didn’t want to be bothered with making a lot of change. However, when InBev purchased Anheuser in 2008 and raised all of their prices rather significantly, Buzzy agreed that it was time to raise the prices. We went to $2.00 everyday and $1.50 on Tasty Tuesdays and Thirsty Thursdays.
Another feature of Thirsty Thursday involves having Teri Yates take care of things on that night. Thursday always was a pretty good night beer sale-wise but with Teri at the helm things became very good mostly because she is attractive, personable, single and accordingly draws a crowd. (Even Buzzy, who was not one for having a lot of, if any, paid help, when he saw how Teri attracted and increased business commented, “Damn I should have thought of her years ago.” On the other hand I sometimes think that Thursday was a pretty good night before with the discount and everything as it was, so how dumb am I to have the attractive bar tender here packing the place on a night when the beers are so cheap?!)
Thirsty Thursday is so well known that our most famous local artist Mary Lou Troutman named her following rendition of Buzzy’s Country Store – Thirsty Thursday. For additional info on Mary Lou’s prints click here.
