Heard Johnny Rivers doing Memphis the other day and it reminded me of something I read in Peter Guralnick’s book (click here) about him and Elvis. There’s some discussion/debate as to whether or not Johnny first heard Elvis doing the song and then rushed to record it before Elvis could do so. Pissed Elvis off and Johnny became persona non grata in the King’s entourage afterwards click here for the rest of the story.
With that in mind, it’s only a little ironic that this Johnny Rivers’ Memphis video features several shots of Graceland and Elvis. (Lost of course in all of this white boys whining clap trap is the fact that the song was Chuck’s to begin with. But that’s another story.)
