Widest River?

Trick question for you: name the longest river in the United States.  Answer, the Missouri River.  Now an even trickier one – name the widest river.  If you do the google thing, you’ll see the answer sites vary between the Neuse River in North Carolina and the Mississippi River.  Both are mentioned as being 6 or 7 miles wide at some point.

However, I recall hearing that the Potomac River is the widest in the United States.  From Pt. Lookout to Smith Point, Va., the Potomac is 11 miles wide click here. Guess it’s like a lot of things where the answer is dependent on where one measures and who’s doing the measuring.
