Marchetti's/Monks

John Porter was in Buzzy’s Country Store the other night discussing some of his experiences in running Monk’s Inn.  John ran Monk’s in the early 90’s and said that some of the best advice he received was from another bar owner who told him “Get your bouncers in line.  You can’t let them go hitting people because if they do, you’re going to end up in court.”  (Thankfully I don’t need to worry about that here at Buzzy’s.)

In discussing the current move to re-open Monk’s Inn, several Buzzy’s patrons listed the many incarnations of the business.  (Some of us even showed our age by noting to the younger dudes that Matt Blair and Beale Tilton ran it at one time “back in the day.”)

Tony Marchetti’s name came up and someone mentioned that he had just passed away.   To read Tony’s obit click here.  The following is an excerpt from that:

In 1972, the Marchetti Family purchased a bar and restaurant located in St. Inigoes, MD. Tony aptly labeled the bar the “Monk’s Inn”, because it was located on Trapp Road, named after former residents, the Trappist Monks.

This came as a double surprise to me because I’d never heard that Tony had named the place after a religious order nor did I know about the Trapp Road – Monk connection.  (Somewhere along the line though I do recall wondering why Trapp Road had 2 p’s.)  I always assumed that Tony named the bar after Redskins’ receiver Art Monk.
Hope the new owners retain the Monks name but regardless what they may call it, some of us will always call it Monks.  Here’s to you Tony.
