Sunday in Buzzy’s Country Store I enjoyed catching up with Craig Jarboe. He and his biker buddies (above) were out and about riding around the County after having hit Myrtle Beach bike week last week.
I met Craig several years ago thru his Aunt Tina and Uncle Wellington Hewitt. Not only was Craig a Ryken graduate, but also we found that we had another connection. Years ago, my Uncle Manny Ridgell hired Craig to work on Capitol Hill. Manny was in charge of the House Office Building and orchestrated all of the maintenance, repairs and operations within the building. Thus, Manny had some say in who got hired and readily admitted that he had a quasi-affirmative action program for St. Mary’s County boys. Manny said that he hired County boys not just because he himself was from the County, but because he had found County boys to be dependable, honest and hardworking. Leslie Ridgell, Jack Price, Jay Dameron were a few of the Manny program hires from the County. At one time there were several carpools of County boys, many of whom Manny had hired, commuting to work on Capitol Hill.
Craig told me that he actually had to pester Manny for a full time position because his first position was as a temporary hire. After Craig repeatedly asked Manny if anything permanent had opened up job wise, Manny finally told him one day, “Son, I’m going to hire you just so you’ll stop bothering me.” Craig said that it was one of his early lessons in life – to be persistent.
I haven’t seen Craig in a while and that’s because he and his wife Beth are now residing in Metter, Georgia. Metter is located a little ways from Statesboro so you know what’s next – “wake up momma, turn your lamp down low:”
