Old Friends

As Brady helped me pass them down from the attic, I’m semi-embarrassed to confess that this was the first time getting rid of them ever crossed my mind.  I’ve moved these four crates of albums dozens of times, but for the last 30 years they’ve been safely stashed in my attic out of sight and out of mind.

However, as I removed them from the attic this time in preparation for the renovations about to commence on my house next week, I tried to think where to stow them now.  A little voice said “Just toss ’em.”  And for the briefest of moments I considered doing just that.

Then I thought about all those headphoned nights spent with them, all the comfort they provided me, all the pot cleaned on those double albums, and all the times Jim Morrison’s words ricocheted in my head “Music is your only friend.”   I realized that I couldn’t really consider getting rid of them even though I don’t even own a record player anymore.

So I hauled my old friends out to my workshop where they will remain until a new attic and home materializes for them.

P.S. Speaking of old friends, Paul Simon turned 70 last year.  Wonder if he still thinks it “how terribly strange to be 70” (@1:20 mark.)
