Sentences That Never End Well – The Ring Talk

Things I’ve learned: When someone starts a sentence with “You better sit down,” you better sit down.  Along those lines, I stumbled upon the following at Simplythebestman.com

10 Sentences That Never End Well
“Well it’s not very big but it is an interesting shape…”
“On the plus side Mr (X) you’ve now got a new disease named after you…”
“Good news, my mom’s coming to stay….”
“Well the results are positive…” (conversely this is only ever negative)
“I’ve already uploaded it to YouTube…”
“Well with the extra work the final bill is…”
“I looked at your Facebook page…”
“Honey did you remember to…”
“I found this in your pocket…”
“I think it’s time we talked about our future…”

China’s Ring of Life (from wordlesstech.com)

That last entry reminded me of a time that I actually heard that line.  Back in my bachelor days, I’d been dating a young lady for sometime. We’d been traveling alot, having fun, I enjoyed her company and things were good. A workmate of mine, Ben, asked me one day if I had been confronted with the “ring talk” from her. I laughed and told Ben that we had not had any such discussions and that there wouldn’t be any since I never planned on sailing on that boat again. (Things change right?) Ben chided me and said, “Careful.  Sooner or later they want a ring.”

That very evening after Ben and I had had that discussion at work, my lady friend and I were sitting on the beach, watching the sunset when she turned to me and said out of the blue “We need to talk about our future. I want a ring.” Immediately, I laughed, which in retrospect probably wasn’t the best of responses at that point in the conversation as it seemed to rile her up.  I quickly tried to explain my conversation with Ben earlier in the day and how surprised I was that she was now bringing it up.

We discussed it some more but after my intentions, or lack of I should say, came to light, we (she) let it drop.  However, we split up shortly afterwards.
