My buddy Pat Browne informed me awhile back that his son-in-law Ira was born at Buzzy’s Country Store. I finally contacted Ira and received this e-mail from him:
Anyway, Yes, I am Donna and Pat Browne’s Son-In-Law, married their youngest daughter Erica. I also know the Dean’s (Linda, Leonard, and kids), from two houses down from Buzzy’s, very well. They were my babysitters growing up, and remain close family friends. My sister had a wedding reception two weeks ago. Pat (my Dad-in-Law), Erica (my wife), Linda and Leonard Dean, and I had a whole conversation about Buzzy’s over the weekend. And Pat was telling us about you, and how he knows you etc. He had some good stories from back in the day. Leonard had some good stories as well. He said last time he saw you, you said there had been two weddings, a funeral, and a birth at Buzzy’s (I may have the numbers wrong there). And you were very surprised to hear that the only birth was in-fact Pat’s son-in-law. SMALL WORLD, right? My family moved away from St. Mary’s Co. in ’88, to the Shen. Valley VA. So I/we never knew the Browne’s while we lived at Point Lookout. Erica and I met in college, and when we both told each other we were from St. Mary’s…the rest was history 😉 So this is kind of odd (and cool) that you are emailing me. I’m copying my wife on this, as she may have something to add. Good hearing from you.
After I received the above account from Ira, his Mom copied me on her response back to Ira:
That was pretty much right except for your birth was a planned home birth with a mid-wife present. She recognized the emergency and summoned the rescue squad. I was taken to Pax. Naval Hospital, then shock trauma in Baltimore. Friends took you to St. Mary’s Hospital, I believe….but you ended up under the care of Dad and Grandmom until I was back home. Buzzy and the “store people” took a collection and presented you with a bank after you were born (which we still have at home).
So there you have the story of the man born in Buzzy’s. Several of us may be able to say that we were raised in Buzzy’s, but Ira is the only one I know of who can state that he was born in Buzzy’s. What an honor!
