Something that may not be on your National events calendar – this coming Saturday is National Lighthouse Day. (Think I’m going to initiate a campaign to have a National Country Store Day.) Regarding the above article, note how it states that the Piney Point Lighthouse will be available for “viewing.” I was there the other day with the Grandkids and because the Lighthouse is undergoing some rehab, visitors were not permitted to go into the lighthouse. I was told it would be another month or so before it would be back open.
However, our South County Pt. Lookout Lighthouse will be open from 10 to 2 for you to tour.
Couple years ago on Lighthouse Day, I had a couple in Buzzy’s Country Store who had flown into BWI just that morning from Buffalo, New York, rented a car and drove down to visit Pt. Lookout Lighthouse. When I very diplomatically inquired why they would fly in from New York and then drive 2 1/2 hours to make such a visit, they informed me that they were Lighthouse junkies. They specifically wanted to see Pt. Lookout Lighthouse because it was famous for two reasons: being haunted but also because it is unique in that it really is a light with a house under it. They told me that most of what are termed lighthouses are really structures with a beacon on them and the keepers’ quarters are situated adjacent to it like the Piney Point one in the photo above. I confessed that I wasn’t aware of all that lighouseology but it made sense. In fact, if you google “lighthouse images,” here’s what you get, so maybe my Buffalo visitors were onto something:
