Farewell to the Stick

Entry to “The Stick”

Huh?

Brady, Usher and Niner Fan

Brady and I had been to San Francisco a few years back to check out Giants’ Pac Bell Ball Park and the A’s Oakland Coliseum.  However, we were not able to attend a 49ers game at Candlestick Park because the schedule did not align up for us to do so.

Thus, when I found out that this would be the last season for Candlestick and that it would be torn down, I told Brady we needed to return to the Bay Area and check out “The Stick.”  Thus, we spent this past weekend in San Fran and caught Sunday’s Niners/Rams game which figures to be the third to the last game to be played at The Stick.  Lots of fans wore shirts proclaiming “Respect The Stick.”  However, I think what they really meant to say was respect the memories made at The Stick because the stadium itself is a bit of a dump.  Soul less slab of concrete, set in a sketchy part of town, the Stick really has nothing redeeming about it at all.  Can see why they want to tear it down.

All fans entering the Park received a Farewell Shawl which I now have hanging amidst Buzzy’s hat collection.

Couple old timers sat next to us at the game and discussed being long time season ticket holders.  One of them pointed out his seat in the end zone corner where he was camped out when Dwight Clark made “The Catch.”  He said it’s a memory that he will never forget.

Of course with me being a Ravens’ fan, “The Catch” for us will always be this one.  Doubt that the young lady commenting in the video will soon forget it either.

As for going to the new Levis Stadium being built down the road in Silicon Valley, both the old timers agreed that they would not be going to anymore Niners’ games.  Rest in peace – The Stick and all those memories.
