New Year’s Day – February

I have a complaint about the holiday season.  Christmas and New Year’s Eve should be farther apart.  You no sooner get Christmas over and done with and then you got this New Year’s business to deal with.  I propose moving New Year’s day a little ways down the calendar road.

This is not a new idea either because back in the days before the adoption of the Gregorian Calendar, the New Year was celebrated on the Feast of the Annunciation on 25 March (click here for info.)  This explains too why Maryland Day was established as 25 March because they wanted it to coincide with the beginning of the new year.

Thus, I propose that while we don’t necessarily move the start of the new year back to March, how about something around the start of February?  Since the Super Bowl is now in the first week of February, make that New Year’s Day too and think of the party possibilities.

All that said however, as I continue to work on my “Change the New Year Day Campaign,” we’ll still celebrate this year’s January kick off with a New Year’s Eve party at Buzzy’s Country Store next Tuesday evening.

Hope you can make it for one of the hourly “drops.”  Usually we end up around 9 or 10 pm so you can  be back home in time to watch all the midnight festivities on T-V.  For me however,   I can’t stay up that late anymore.
