The Buzzy Shirt Survives

Seinfeld had his “Puffy Shirt,” I have my “Buzzy Shirt.”  He bought me this shirt several years ago when he visited Guatemala.  In the years since, I have worn it exactly 3 times.  Not one of my favorite shirts you see, as open necked dashiki’s aren’t exactly my style.

Thru the years, I forgot that Buzzy had given me the shirt.  Thus, in 1999 when we were set to go to Peru I packed it thinking that that would be a good place to wear and throw it away.  However, the night I donned it to wear to dinner in Lima, Buzzy noticed it and said, “I hope you’re not planning on throwing that shirt away because I paid a lot of money for it.”  I lied and told him that I was not planning on throwing it away.  Afterwards, I didn’t want to chance him seeing me throw the shirt away; so I brought it back home with me and placed it in my closet where it has hung for several more years.

When I saw on the itinerary for this trip that Pam and I just took that Costa Rica was a stop for the cruise ship, I figured that may be about as close to Guatemala that I may ever get so now would be a good time to cut the Buzzy shirt loose.  I packed it and wore it for the second time to a dinner one night on the cruise ship.

My plan was to off load the shirt at the last port we visited which was Costa Rico.  However, in Costa Rico, I did a rain forest excursion and in the churn to disembark and catch the bus for the side trip I forgot about disposing of the Buzzy shirt.  We got back to ship a little late from the rain forest and immediately set sail across the Caribbean for Fort Lauderdale.  Thus, the Buzzy shirt made it back to the U.S.A.

On the morning of our disembarking from the ship, I packed everything but left the shirt hanging in our cabin’s closet.  Pam asked if I had left the shirt.  I acknowledged doing so, but asked her to take a final picture of me in the shirt (right.)

Guess what?  I had been wearing a long sleeved blue oxford shirt which was hot and clammy.  On the other hand, when I put on the Buzzy  shirt, it felt very cool and comfortable.  I decided to pack the oxford and just continue to wear the Buzzy shirt off the ship and into the 80 degree Florida temps.

Once we made it back to Pam’s parents Sol and Stella’s place in Ft. Lauderdale, the Buzzy shirt got packed and brought back to Piney Point.

Some things, you just can’t get rid of.
