Cotton and Mary Allen

Ok, one more bird-related post and tomorrow I promise to return to the customary Buzzy-B.S. that you usually expect to stumble upon in your visits here.

Been lots of articles of late on the osprey.  Washington Post had a good story discussing tracking the osprey as it makes the 3K mile trek from South America to return to the County each year (click here.)  Locally, the Enterprise published a series of Letters to the Editor discussing how SMECO assists in finding homes for the ospreys (click here.

And re: building homes for the ospreys, earlier this year my son Brady built an osprey nest holder just off my pier.  Sure enough a few weeks afterwards, a young couple moved in and built their nest.  Here’s a photo that bonus daughter Jennifer took the other day.

Now that I have a nice young couple roosting at my place, I’ve decided to name them Cotton and Mary Allen.  (Little bit of an involved story as to how I chose these names, so swing by the Store and I’ll tell you about it sometime.)

St. George’s Island should just be re-named Osprey Island as there are osprey nests everywhere you look.  I grabbed this shot yesterday morning of one resting peacefully in her nest on Island Creek.

And here is a photo of a photo courtesy of Post Master Brenda Elwood who has it on display in the Piney Point Post Office.  (Not sure what their names are however.)

Any one else remember Gertrude and Heathcliff?
