This past Sunday evening a lady stopped in Buzzy’s Country Store to buy some beer.  Because she was by herself and attractive, she quite naturally received the full attention of my beer drinking regulars as she made her purchase.   In between my Buzzy boys flirting with her,  I was only able to determine that she is from Boston College and that her son was competing in the sailing event for BC.  I wanted to learn more about the competition from her but my boys with a buzz on kept her otherwise occupied.

However, not 5 minutes after she left, another attractive, single lady came in and it was almost a re-run of how the BC lady’s visit went.  Turns out that this lady was from Jersey and that her son was competing for St. Mary’s in the sailing competition.  She was not happy that Yale had taken the lead over from St. Mary’s at the day’s end.

And then yesterday I not only had some visitors from Oregon State  drop in the Store, but also the BC lady made a return visit to Buzzy’s this time with her husband.  (Bet the conversation was something along the lines “Honey you got to see this place.  You won’t believe it.”)  I got to talk to them about the competition, how sailing does not compete along Division I, II, III categories, the different stages of competition and how the championship event is rotated around the country.  When it comes to sailing, St. Mary’s College is one of the top schools in the country primarily because of its favorable environment and conditions.  In fact, some colleges, one of whom was this year’s champion Yale, come down to St. Mary’s to train just because of the ideal conditions.

Lots of sailing songs to choose from and my favorite remains Steven Stills’ Southern Cross divorce song which I’ve discussed previously.  So how about what may well be my favorite Beach Boys tune – Sail On Sailor?  Warning, it doesn’t sound like your typical Help Me Rhonda Beach Boys schlock, which is probably why I like it.
